Frequently asked contents insurance questions

Can’t find what you’re looking for? We have plenty more FAQs here.

Contents insurance covers the things inside your home that are not fixed to the building, basically everything you would take with you if you moved. That includes furniture, whiteware, electronics, clothing, jewellery and everyday belongings. It generally protects them against events like fire, theft and accidental damage, both at home and often while you are out and about.

Yes. With Cove you can take out contents insurance on its own, without needing a house policy, which suits renters, flatmates and anyone who wants to protect their belongings but does not own the building. If you do own your home, you can hold contents alongside your house cover instead. Either way you get a quote online in a few minutes.

It is not compulsory, but it is easy to underestimate how much your belongings are worth until you add them all up. Replacing a whole household of furniture, appliances, clothing and electronics after a fire or burglary can run to tens of thousands of dollars. If covering that from your own savings would hurt, contents insurance is usually worth having.

Aim to insure your contents for what it would cost to replace everything new, rather than what you originally paid. The easiest way is to walk through your home room by room and tally up the cost of replacing furniture, appliances, clothing, kitchenware and valuables. A free online contents calculator gives you a good starting estimate, and it is worth reviewing after any big purchases.

Contents insurance usually costs a good deal less than house insurance, and your premium depends on your sum insured, where you live, the excess you choose, and any high-value items you list separately. The quickest way to find your price is to get a quote, which only takes a few minutes with Cove.

Yes, and this matters more than many people realise. The Natural Hazards Commission Toka Tū Ake covers your land and, through your insurer, your home, but it no longer covers your belongings. Since contents were removed from the government scheme, private contents insurance is now the only way to protect your things against natural disasters like earthquakes, so it is worth making sure your policy includes natural hazard cover.

Your landlord's insurance covers the building, not your belongings, so if your things were damaged in a fire or stolen in a burglary you would not be covered by their policy. Contents insurance is for exactly this, and renters can insure their belongings the same way homeowners do. It can also include cover if you are legally liable for accidental damage to the property you rent.

Replacement value, sometimes called new-for-old, pays to replace a lost or damaged item with a brand new equivalent. Present-day value, also known as indemnity value, pays what the item is worth now, allowing for age and wear. Most modern contents policies pay replacement value for the majority of items, with a few categories like clothing settled at present-day value, so it pays to know which applies.

Many contents policies extend cover to your belongings when you take them out of the house, often while you are moving home or travelling within New Zealand, and sometimes with limited overseas cover too. Cover away from home usually has its own limits, and high-value items like jewellery may need to be listed separately, so it is worth checking the details.

Contact your insurer as soon as you can, and for theft or burglary report it to the Police first. Photos, receipts or a simple home inventory make it much easier to prove what you owned and speed up your claim. With Cove you can lodge a contents claim online whenever it suits you.

Yes. Many New Zealanders hold house and contents cover together as a single home and contents arrangement, which can be simpler to manage and keeps everything in one place. You can get a quote with Cove online and manage your policies together through My Cove.
